E92 330i vs 335i

So seriously considering changing my car to an e92. Found two nice examples.

One is a manual 330i
Other is an auto 335i

Now I know there is a difference in performance between the two but the main thing I'm worried about is the reliability and the problems and expense that can come with the 335i. But I'm thinking if I got a 330i would I be wishing I got the 335i ? Thoughts. I know a few have gone for the 335i on here.

I'd want a manual but would go for the 335i. IMO the 330i won't be much of an upgrade over the E46.

I have a manual 335 so can't comment on the auto box (but I believe the later boxes to be a lot better than the early ones). Engines are absolutely brilliant, the E46 in my opinion is the better drivers car but the E92 is a lot better built (no rust wings or arches). Running costs wise the 335 is about the same as M3 as its a thirsty engine (I average 19mpg on my commute) but this is more than offset by the performance, it is blisteringly quick especially when coupled with a few mods.....but here lies the problem, once you start modding you inevitably start running into issues, I'm running a JB4 module, 7" inter cooler, different intakes,catless downpipes etc, to get this all working in harmony takes a while and expertise, Terry at BMS is invaluable at helping me out and in my experience is always quick and accurate with his responses.
If you leave it standard though you shouldn't have any real issues other than the well documented wastegate rattle (there is a software fix for this but most people avoid it as it loses power). many people will also change things like cam cover breathers and the like for extra reliabilty.
All in all I'm happy with my 335, the N54 engine is more tuneable but the N55 engine has less issues.

i have a 325i E92 as you know. It is slow and boring to drive.

Totally lacking in comparison to the E46 imo the power would be the only thing that would make it entertaining tbh. It looks great and feels more modern but driving feedback is numb and the way it drives is a bit lack lusture.

Went to view an m3 today and wow what a piece of shit maintenance wise it was very good all the right bits was done and checked although I could hear a buzzing sound which felt like it was coming from the engine and got louder as we accelerated but the body work was a right mess and the interior was ruined. Was going to get it for £7k. But would've had to spend about £1k on paint which I didn't want to do. So think I may up my budget and get a really nice one. All I can say is I'm hooked and really want one the power is such a jump from my 330.

Be prepared to spend money on one mate. I bought mine for just under £6500 and looking at what's out there now think I did quite well. When I bought mine I was prepared to spend a grand or so getting it up to scratch. I think if you want a perfect one that doesn't need money spending you will have to be very lucky or have to spend well over £10k.

Yeah I've been looking to get one for around £7k. But now I'm thinking maybe I just up my budget or leave it for the moment. Because I don't want to buy a money pit.

I went in a smg today and I have to say I was very impressed. And was gutted the paintwork didn't match to how described.

I regret not trying one to be fair.

Less to worry about with the manual but its not the nicest box to use and every time I'm sat in traffic I wish I had an auto!

Just need to check the smg box has been looked after had any recalls and maybe if it's had the box changed.

The box itself is the same as the manual and isn't prone to failure. Common issues are with the pump, actuator, and the control unit.

There are also issues with detent springs and relays but these are a cheaper fix.

This one has had front bumper, bonnet, front wings, roof, and doors all repainted and all blended in. Has a few nice mods. Has got polybushes all round. Had the subframe checked and all is perfect no cracks.

first one looks a bit odd, wood dash trim & then titan door pulls & gear shift surround? Also no mention of running in service?

second one again no running in service, looks to have been maintained well though & some tidy mods already sorted.

Also, the SMG box is notoriously hard work when cold, its very jerky, not the pleasant auto experience you'd be thinking of when just pottering unfortunatley.

Carbon black shows up chips so the front end respray would be a positive if its not been in a bump.

Neither mention the boot floor being done (this will go on every M3 at some point) it will cost you circa £700 to have plated. Don't be fooled by people saying they've been checked. You need to drop the subframe slightly to check there aren't cracks on the boot floor where it mounts to the car - I'd just allow to have it re-inforced as it will need doing at some point.

You need to view really but bear in mind inspection 2 is around £700, discs and pads are around £1k all round.

Head gasket is another common fault on the M3. They don't leak oil / water but it goes between cylinders and starts pinking under heavy load at low revs. Mine went at 84k and I've got an invoice for £2800 from a main dealer.

Manual coupes are the most desirable which is generally reflected in the prices.

Wouldn't worry about running in service at over 100k. If they are pre-facelift they should have received new big end bearings anyway under recall. This can be checked by phoning BMW with the reg. number.
